New Year, new you? Since New Year's Eve is rapidly approaching, have you thought of your resolutions and what you want to achieve next year? Do you make resolutions or practice goal setting throughout the year?

According to psychologist Lynn Bufka, PhD, “Setting small, attainable goals throughout the year, instead of a singular, overwhelming goal on January 1 can help you reach whatever it is you strive for. Remember it is not the extent of the change that matters, but rather the act of recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward it, one step at a time.”

For example, if your goal is to “be healthier” for 2022, take a moment to analyze and ask yourself what does being healthy mean to you? Some people believe it is to not drink alcohol  or smoke, for some it is to exercise everyday and for others it is to drink a certain amount of water per day. Whatever “being healthy” means to you, try setting small achievable goals that relate to your larger goal. For example, in January, one could decrease their alcohol and smoking consumption by half, exercise every third day or to drink 2 more glasses of water than they usually do. Once the goal setter achieves their goals in January, they can continue to set small attainable goals that correlate to their New Years resolution.
