National Multiple Personality Day

Today is National Multiple Personality Day! It is a holiday in which people are encouraged to learn more about Dissociative Identity Disorders (DID). Also it’s a day for those with DID’s to learn more about their personalities and diagnosis.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a DID is a mental health condition where a person has two or more separate identities and these personalities control their behavior at different times. Each of these identities has its own personal history, traits, likes and dislikes.

A DID used to be called multiple personality disorder or split personality disorder. This is a pretty rare disorder that affects between 0.01 and 1% of the population and women are more likely than men to have DID.

For those living with DID, having a strong support system can make life more manageable. The support system can include healthcare providers, family members and friends who know and understand the condition.
