Mental fitness
We have all heard that physical fitness is an essential portion of our overall health. Nowadays, there is more and more talk about the importance of mental fitness and the effects it has on the body. According to an article written by Dr. Andrew Miki, mental fitness is defined as a state of well-being and having a positive sense of how we feel, think and act.
Dr. Miki explains that just as there are four components to physical fitness (cardiovascular, endurance, strength, flexibility and healthy weight), there are also four components to mental fitness. They are:
1. Emotional - self acceptance, self esteem, resilience and the ability to manage emotions
2. Social - friends, family and support networks that all bring companionship, inclusion and enrichment to our lives
3. Financial - feeling as you are in control of your finances, low levels of stress when it comes to money issues and staying on track to reach your financial and life goals
4. Physical - healthy diet and exercise, prioritizing sleep to decrease risk of developing chronic illness
