A couple posts ago we mentioned that it was National Multiple Personality Day! Let’s circle back to Borderline Personality Disorder to learn more about it.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a highly stigmatized psychiatric condition that has a couple of myths to it. See below for four myths that need to be busted.
1. Difficult women and BPD are the same: there is usually a 3:1 female to male ratio for diagnosis according to the DSM-5
2. BPD is untreatable: this is usually portrayed in movies and tv shows however, there is treatment that can assist the individual to live a good life
3. Those with BPD are just manipulative and could control their behaviors whenever they want: a person is more complex than this as genetics and core schema play a part
4. BPD can’t be diagnosed or treated before age 18: In the DSM-5 it states that this is just not true
