Boundaries

When you think of setting boundaries do you think of cutting off people? Or do you think that boundaries are defined as saying no to things that you don’t want to do?

In Nedra Glover Tawwab’s book, “The Set Boundaries Workbook,” she explains that neither of the above thoughts are explanations that define boundaries.

She explains that there is a working definition of boundaries and can be defined as setting perimeters with those around us and is a way to communicate with others. Additionally boundaries hold you accountable for creating the life you want to live.

It’s important to have healthy boundaries to protect yourself from many issues; anxiety, depression and burnout are just a few. Nedra Glover Tawwab reminds us that:

  1. We can’t do it all, and we shouldn’t try.
  2. We can’t be everything to everyone and we shouldn’t try.
  3. We can’t please everyone and we shouldn’t try.

Next time you feel like you “should” go to that party, volunteer on a Saturday morning or reply instantaneously to an email that just came into your inbox, take a second to think about if this decision aligns with how you want to live your life.
