As mentioned in the previous post Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach of psychology that stems from process based approach to psychological intervention that is grounded in modern behavioural and evolutionary science. ACT educates clients to accept their inner emotions instead of denying or struggling to cope with them. By accepting that these deep inner emotions are appropriate responses to certain situations, one can move forward in their life. By applying ACT strategies, clients can accept their hardships and issues in addition to adapting to what’s happening in their daily lives by changing their behaviour.
The theory behind ACT is that it is more effective to change the way you think in regards to your deep inner emotions. By transitioning to mindful behaviour, shifting attention to personal values and applying a commitment to action, one can change their attitude and emotional state in combination to learning to accept psychological experiences. Furthermore, the theory of ACT deduces that it is an ineffective tactic to suppress or control deep inner emotions and can cause an individual more distress.
ACT has been proven to be effective in helping individuals with physical and mental health conditions such as chronic pain, diabetes, anxiety, depression, substance abuse disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
When working with a therapist who practices ACT, the client learns how to listen to their own self-talk about traumatic events, problematic relationships, physical limitations and/or other issues. The individual can then decide if the issue requires immediate action and change or if it can be accepted for what it is and then apply a behavioural change that can affect the situation. Once an individual has faced and accepted the current issues, they can then make a commitment to stop fighting the past and their emotions. Instead one can start practicing more confident and optimistic behaviours based on personal values and goals.
